Sam Trickett Interview

Poker Sharks magazine asks the $2.9m winner how you become a pro player

Sam Trickett Interview

SAM Trickett has crossed chips with the likes of Phil Ivey in his quest to poker stardom. We managed to catch him in a rare moment away from the table to get his advice on turning pro, and to hear about the worst bad beat he has ever known.

Can you tell us how you got into poker and describe your progression to where you are today?
I started playing poker with friends in the pub and started winning and realising there was a skill in the game. I then got addicted to it and played every chance I got. I started travelling to casinos to play the £50 freeze-outs and the small stakes cash games.

Are there any valuable lessons that you have learnt that you could share with our readers?
Yes. Don’t play house games if you’re trying to make a living from poker and treat poker as a business and not as a game.

What advice would you give to a low to mid stakes player, who hopes to move up in this game?
Move up when you’re winning and playing well and not when you’re on a losing streak. Some people decide to move up stakes when they are losing to try and recover their losses but it’s the worse time to move up.

There are a lot of players out there who prefer live play rather than the internet. Do you think it is possible to progress through the ranks from pub league player to cashing in higher stakes games just on live play alone, or do you think internet play is a must?
I think in order to become a top player you need to play as many hands as possible and play against the best players from time to time to keep on top of your game. It’s good to play online because it’s a completely different form of poker and it’s good to know how the online players play.

How do you prepare yourself for a major tournament? Do you ever suffer from nerves before a game?
I don’t prepare much for any tournament apart from getting a good night’s sleep. I never get nervous either.

Your recent trip to Australia must be one to remember, winning a combined $2.9 million. How do you feel?
Yes it felt great and is my biggest achievement to date.

Which players were your icons before you made it and have you ever had to face those heads up? Did you win and how did that feel?
Patrick and Ivey were my two favourite players and I have played with them both in cash games. I also played Ivey in the WSOPE heads up and he collared me after eight hands so that was pretty disappointing.

Who would you credit with being the biggest influence on your career?
James Bord has shown me how to appreciate money and the importance of being level headed.

Describe the sickest beat that you have seen.
I got told this one and it is still my favourite. Three guys were re-raising a lot pre-flop and then two went all-in. The last guy's tank folded and said he folded KK and the other two guys had AA and KK. There was a lot of money in the pot and the board ran out..........7,2,3.......8...... The guy with aces is already counting his stack because the third guy said he had folded KK. A king popped off on the river. The guy was obviously lying.

What are your aspirations for the future?
I’d like to get a few bracelets and also be known as one of the best players in the world.

What is your favourite starting hand?
I would be lying if I didn’t say aces but I love J9 of diamonds.

What is your favourite venue?
DTD poker room.
