MOVE over Stone Roses, another iconic Manchester band are going to be making the news, for a short while at least. And in Chester.
The Fall, headed by frontman, Mark E Smith are launching their new album at a one-off special show at the Laugh Inn in Chester next Monday 28 November.
Since their formation in 1976, The Fall have released 50 singles, 28 studio albums, and around 50 compilation and live albums.
“The Fall, always different, always the same,” said John Peel of his favourite band, and when the highly-respected DJ died in 2004, Smith made a notorious appearance on BBC’s Newsnight to show his appreciation for Peel’s unwavering support.
And they’re still going strong while others have fallen at the wayside, releasing a new album at least every two years. Granted they’ve gone through more changes than Madonna’s wardrobe, (there have been over fifty different line-ups so far with Smith being the only constant), but they have a legion of dedicated fans.
The current line-up of Smith (vox), David Spurr (bass), Elini Poulou (keys), Pete Greenway (guitar) and Kierion Mellings (drums) are relatively established by Fall standards.
The show in Chester next Monday is a chance for followers to hear their latest album, Ersatz GB. It retains their characteristic sound coupled with Smith’s distinctive voice.
And over the years, the frontman has won acclaim for his lyrical style, which mixes elements of social realism and surrealism as he addresses topics such as drug use, unemployment, football and the supernatural.
The new album has been long-awaited and the gig in Chester is a chance for the audience to first appreciate the latest offering from the band.
John Locke, co-director of the Laugh Inn, said, “The launch of this new album by Mark E Smith at the Laugh Inn was a personal request to me, and must be regarded as an exceptional coup for us.”
He added, “Mark E Smith and the Fall are certainly one of the top bands ever to come out of Manchester and just everybody has been waiting for this new album.”
The launch is on Monday November 28 at the Laugh Inn, Station Road, Chester, CH1 3DR.
Tickets are £10 in advance, or more on the door, and are available through www.ticketweb.com, or by telephoning the Laugh Inn booking office directly on 0800 6129711.
BUT you can win an absolutely superb prize: an overnight stay, dinner, bed and breakfast at the Commercial Hotel Chester with free tickets for two on the night of the launch.
