The future is sonic

Manchester is packing in the festivals this year and before anyone thinks they’ve got the festival of all festivals, Futuresonic are about to throw a spanner in the works.

Futuresonic is Manchester’s urban festival of art, music and ideas. It provides exactly what it says on the tin…the future of music.

Drew Hemment, Futuresonic’s founder and Director describes his 3 day event as ‘a coming together of pioneers, mavericks and 21st century 'happenings.’

With more than 300 artists lined up, this years festival is set to be unprecedented. Music For The Beep Generation is the festival’s central live music programme and boasts the best top acts such as Wolfgang Flür (Kraftwerk), French hip-hop sensation TTC and Krautrock pioneers Faust. There is also the rebirth of ‘60s London’s legendary UFO Club going head to head with TRAMP!- underground Manchester’s own and very finest – to create an unmissable 21st Century Freak-Out.

Malcolm Duffin, festival organiser, said: “Manchester has always been a city of ideas - the world's first industrial society was here. The world’s first computer was born here and Karl Marx met Engels here. The list goes on. Manchester has always looked to the Future. Mix that culture of ideas with its world-class reputation for music and you’ve got this amazing, energetic and full-on festival that only Manchester could create.”

With no mud and no tents, Futuresonic is strictly about the audio and visual performances. Nothing else is needed as the music speaks for itself.

Art for Shopping Centres is an interactive project central to Urban Play (the Festival’s Art and Technology strand) in which the environment of Manchester Arndale is transformed into a playground to be explored by some of the UK’S finest free-runners (known as Parkour- the sport of fluid urban movement). The performance will be screened to the public from May 10–20 all around the Arndale Centre. Forget Spider-Man 3 this will be an event to make your jaw drop as the free runners literally bounce off the walls.

For the geniuses and geeks amongst us, The Social Technologies Summit is the 'ideas strand' of the Futuresonic festival. As a major international conference, it explores the creative and social potential of new technologies, bringing together leading figures to explore "a whole new way of doing things in the air".

The 2007 summit includes a session introducing the leading figures in the grass roots open source movement that is sweeping across Brazil like wild fire.

Malcolm said: “We expect a turnout of around 10,000 for the main events but, if you count those who experience Art for Shopping Centres, which turns the Arndale Centre into an art gallery we are talking far, far more.”

Weekender wristbands cost £30 and give access to over thirty Futuresonic events as well as food and drink discounts.
