The Saturdays review

Nicola Hughes on the mini-skirts, the miming and the man with a mini screen

The Saturdays review

Before this concert, I only really knew two things about The Saturdays; they sing catchy pop songs that I’ve enjoyed dancing to on many an occasion on Deansgate Locks and most of my male friends think they’re pretty fit. So what have I learnt?

Another amusing part of the evening was when we spotted a lone 40 odd year-old man a few rows in front trying to grab a photo of Mollie (the blonde one). From the angle we were sat, we could see the mini screen on his camera - he was zooming in to only capture her legs.

Well before you ask, yes they really are that good looking in real life. I’m pretty sure this is helped by a truck load of fake hair, tan, eye lashes, and some very good bras.

Music wise they’re okay. There was a lot of backing tracks with small snippets of them singing live at Manchester Apollo last week. These live sections gave Vanessa the opportunity to show off her talent as, undoubtedly, the best singer of the group.

The rest of them can certainly hold a tune though, and there was no messing up the words. Their songs are indeed catchy but I think it speaks for itself that the loudest cheering from the crowd came when they did a cover tribute to Rihanna.

The venue was far from sold out, but this could be because it was a school night. Judging by the audience I bet there were a lot of girls sat in double maths the following morning, with sore throats wishing they hadn’t shouted quite so loudly. I know I had a headache.

The show was nicely staged and between costume changes we were treated to outtakes from their reality TV show The Saturdays: 24/7, which was pretty amusing. Another amusing part of the evening was when we spotted a lone 40 odd year-old man a few rows in front trying to grab a photo of Mollie (the blonde one). From the angle we were sat, we could see the mini screen on his camera - he was zooming in to only capture her legs. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Realising he was on his own and knew all the words to every song, the latter was definitely more appropriate.

As a fan of ridiculously high heels I did covet a few pairs of shoes but the rest of their outfits were pretty dreadful. I can’t imagine they were happy with their stylist’s choices, although, their young fan base probably loved all the fluorescent colours and shimmering tassels. Without wanting to sound like my mother, something that certainly didn’t need to be ‘lifted higher’ was the hemline on their dresses.

The young girls around me were certainly having the time of their lives and considering what’s out there, The Saturday’s definitely aren’t a bad choice as role models - even if their music is quite samey. It was an enjoyable show, but I think I’ll continue to reserve my listening for late nights on Deansgate, after a few vinos.

I thought it was quite a fair review actualy.
I'm a Saturdays fan and was there at the gig myself. It was a fun show and the girls looked great (if you thought their fashion was bad you should have seen what Alexandra Burke was wearing the week before...). While they did sing a lot live (more than I think the review gives them credit for) there were definitely backing vocals on the choruses of most songs.
Obviously they're not going to be everyone's cup of tea but they put on a fun show and I intend to see them again when they return in December.
