Sounds from the Other City

Salford's new music festival is back with a new stage from Radio 1's Huw Stephens

Sounds from the Other City

Manchester and Salford have long battled over which city has the most music credibility to its name. With Sounds from the Other City, Salford proves that it's not always overshadowed by its attention-grabbing neighbour. This annual festival of new music has sold out every year since its inception in 2005 – much to organiser Mark Carlin’s surprise. “We started out putting on bands in these old pubs and bars along Chapel Street and we had no idea if it would work or not,” he says.

Work it did though: past events have included the likes of The Ting Tings and Solar Fire Trio playing to pub-sized crowds. New folk, noise, rock, indie and even contemporary classical all get an airing over the assorted stages, and after repeatedly profiling the event on his influential Radio 1 show, Huw Stephens is joining the throng in 2009.

The Welsh DJ is bringing a mini-version of his SWN festival from Cardiff to this year’s event. As you’d expect, his line-up is mostly Welsh and features two very hot tickets; Marina and the Diamonds (the babelicious Marina is second only to the Pet Shop Boys in Pop Justice’s chart of brilliance) and indie troubadours, Peggy Sue and the Pirates. Other essential acts to catch include the influential electro artist Legowelt, Morgan Quaintance from Does It Offend You, Yeah? with his raucous new outfit, Plugs, and cream of the local scene: Cats in Paris.

Sounds from the Other City takes place in the pubs, clubs and churches of Chapel Street, Salford, Bank Holiday Sunday 3 May, 3pm til late, tickets: £12.50, on sale now at www.quaytickets.com. Go to www.soundsfromtheothercity.com for full listings.

Which "other city" are they the sounds from? Because none of the bands playing are from Salford.Pathetic.

Aggrieved Salford - just to clear this one up - Sounds from the Other City was never about promoting music from one area, i.e Salford - rather it was about putting together a really exciting and quality event that happened in Salford and highlight the fact that in the area of Chapel Street in particular there are a whole host of really interesting, unusual and for the majority of people unheard of places. Each year tons of new people come and discover the area and perhaps go away thinking a little bit differently about the place which surely is a good thing.
