Oxjam Manchester Takeover

The Oxjam Manchester Takeover launches on Sunday the 25th of October – an 8 venue Northern Quarter music and arts festival in aid of Oxfam GB.From 1-11pm, an array of Manchester based musicians and artists will be performing within Common, Odd, The Mint Lounge, Matt & Phreds, Nexus Art Café, Night & Day and Dough.

With headliners Peter Hook (dj), The Sunshine Underground (dj), Rich Reason, The Paris Riots (full band acoustic) and Suzuki Method in The Mint Lounge, The Oxjam Manchester Takeover focuses on established acts as well as bright young city talent.

The line-up of emerging artists includes (deep breath): May 68 / Shmoo / Liz Green / Sophie's Pigeons / Former Bullies / Nathaniel / Hyacinth Girl / Waiters / Kamal Arafa / Meadow / Lady Garden / The Sandells / The Suzukis / Aidan Smith & His Indulgent Friends / Rainbow Trout / Briggzy / The Minx / Natalie Blooms / Walton Hesse / Crooked Rooks / The Other Room (poetry) / Big Issue competition winners (poetry) / Magpahi / Louis Barabbas & The Bedlam Six / Graham Massey / This Week's Gold / Honeyfeet / Girl Peculiar / Deadly Brotherhood of the Gun / Paul Latham’s special Oxjam band / The McNaughton Quintet / Extra Love / Honeyfeet / Shoshin / Jay Krause / Mike Garry / Acid Brass with The Fairey Band / Negotiationofspace (art) / Beat Unhappening (djs) / Revolver (djs) / The Happy Soul / The Alter Egos / Circus Jam / Art Collective featuring Mizuki's Ashes / Mark Rowlands and Raz (DJ) / and Paddy Steer.

The Oxjam Takeover is all about finding your new favourite Manchester band and costs just £7 from We Got Tickets, Ticketline, selected Oxfam shops and Oxjam Manchester venues.

There seems to be a festival in the Northern Quarter every month at the moment. Sophie Bromley, regional manager for Oxjam Manchester, explains why this one is different: “Other Manchester culture festivals don’t mix new city talent, fundraising and volunteering. We raise money for Oxfam and showcase our city’s best upcoming acts in unique ways.”

The fundraising this year focuses on Oxfam's 'Here and Now' climate change campaign. As well as raising hundreds of thousands of pounds, gig goers will be painting their faces blue as part of a massive visual statement to the UK government to take action on climate change before it’s too late.

Since the launch of Oxjam in 2006, more than 36,000 musicians have taken part in almost 3,000 Oxjam events nationwide, raising more than £1,000,000 in the process – enough to provide care for 20,000 vulnerable children and safe water for almost 1.4 million people.

Peter Hook (Joy Division, New Order) is on the bill! And there's a DJ set from The Sunshine Underground too.I can't remember seeing a Manchester festival that mixes rock, jazz, blues, soul and dubstep before. Looking forward to the poetry club too!

Definitely going to this, saw May 68 at In The City on Tuesday and they were brilliant. Been meaning to catch Rich Reason for a while now as well.
