February is a very musical month. Today the talk is last night’s annual Grammy Awards and in a couple of week’s time it will be our own awards ceremony, the Brits. The life cycle of the music industry and such awards shows serve to praise established artists as well as draw light to the new.
One person who is striving to promote the latter is Confidential’s music writer, John Robb. He is holding a launch party on Wednesday 3 February at Cord in the Northern Quarter for his new record label, Modern English.
Describing it as ‘Manchester's new digital and interactive record label for the 21st century’, the label aims to celebrate ‘the guitar dreamers, the wordsmiths and gutter poets that make England a very special pop culture space.’
John Robb with legend Johnny Marr As a reflection of multi-cultural England, Modern English will suit all musical tastes from indie to hip-hop. The launch night is set to include musical guests, 1913, Thallie, Micky P Kerr, Call Me Animal plus a host of DJs. There will also be free food and lots of booze. Get down there and show your support for local talent. They could be future Brit winners.
