Mark Kaye’s Music Column

With January coming to an end, what better way to cheer ourselves through the winter weather than with the great news coming through from America suggesting Sting is to reform the Police in time to open the Grammy’s, before embarking on a world tour!

As a kid growing up I was the BIGGEST Police fan, and I’ll definitely be the first in the queue when tickets go on sale. It was recently reported that Stuart Copeland had said he would be up for the Police reforming for a one off tour and hopefully, if it happens this summer, it will include a performance at Glastonbury.

The Xfm team has created a wish list of acts to headline this year’s eagerly anticipated festival and for me the Police are right up there… closely followed by the Rolling Stones. Mr Eavis is keeping very quiet on the line-up so far but in an exclusive interview with Xfm this week, Pete Townsend let slip that The Who are likely candidates for a top slot so that’s a pretty good start!

Last week’s Xfm/O2 live session with the Guillemots at Night & Day was amazing and I was lucky enough to have two of the band on my show before the gig to give away the last pair of tickets. They really are one of the best live acts I have seen, so it’s no surprise that they have been nominated for the Brits this year in the best live act category. Fife didn’t seem to think they will win as they face stiff competition from Robbie Williams and Muse, but you they get my vote!

It’s been busy in the Xfm office this week with Little Man Tate popping in for a spot of busking, and joining Clint Boon on Music Response to celebrate the upcoming release of their debut album. The new single Sexy in Latin is set to crash into the top ten this weekend and if you can get to see these boys live, they are brilliant. I think it was the smallest crowd they have performed for but they were great and the Xfm team loved it. The album ‘About what you Know’ is out on Monday.

This Friday it’s Bloc Party day on Xfm, so make sure you tune in for a chance to win the new album just by listening and texting in for Friday’s are different. The follow up to Silent Alarm is called A Weekend in the City and you can win it before it gets released. And that’s not all, one lucky listener is going to win the trip of a lifetime – two tickets to see Bloc Party in Milan at the Alcatraz Club!

Finally, if you want to win some money (and let's face it who doesn't!) why not join in our daily competition to guess ‘What's in the Box’ and you could win £1,000. There are three items inside the box and all you have to do is guess what they are. You could be booking a holiday in the sunshine before you know it so check out the website www.xfmmanchester.co.uk for some top tips and get guessing!
