KNICKERS and the 1950s

Laura Marsden describes a new club night which is something for the girls (and lads that bother) – and gives away two tickets

Published on September 20th 2007.

KNICKERS and the 1950s

On Saturday a new night called KNICKERS (with capital letters) is being launched at Night & Day Cafe. It’s not about skinny jeans, white plimsolls, gold handbags and excessive accessories. It’s not about passively absorbing music and alcohol. Rather, it’s your chance to immerse yourself in a collective experience of fun, dancing, art and photography. Get involved, get twisted, whatever, get into some KNICKERS.

Guests are invited to dress up in archetypal feminine costume. The theme for this Saturday is 1950’s Housewives. Photo-booth style pictures will be taken of participants and then exhibited. There will be a few extra bits of costume available on the night but it is encouraged you bring your own headscarves, pinnies, rollers, stockings and bun tins. Obviously, the more effort you put in, the more you'll get out of the experience. It’ll be fun. A cute kind of fun. That is, acute fun. Suggestions for future themes are being compiled online and include (so far) Footballers’ Wives, Page Three Girls, Nurses and Nuns.

Lads are welcome to come and join in the fun and interpret the theme as they see fit – fifties suits for example. Although the night is organised by girls the theme of feminity is not exclusive and you don’t have to get dressed up…but it'd be better if you did.

There is also a KNICKERS fanzine which is well under way and features irreverant comic strips, short fiction, photography, illustration and an article about pubes. For more details go to the Facebook site or contact Toomuchinformation@Hotmail.co.uk.

Guests and contributors are involved online too and have been uploading pictures of themselves in their knickers. If you would like to join them then go to myspace.com/knickers_knickers and/or look for KNICKERS on Facebook. Apparently it's really 'liberating.' The picture here is one of the arty shots we’ve already collected.

The KNICKERS playlist is a mix of tracks to dance to including the likes of: M.I.A, Wanda Jackson, Gwen Stefani, Stevie Nicks, Eve, Girls Aloud, Betty Davis, Kap Bambino, Donna Summer, CSS, Betty Boo, Hank Williams III, The Beat, XTC, The Smiths, Rihanna, Musique, Prince, Rick James, The Ruts, The Cure and Killing Joke.

You can get in free if you bring a pair of KNICKERS. Otherwise it’s two quid.

Saturday 22 September 2007, Night & Day Café, Oldham Street, Manchester. 11pm–2am.

You can also win two tickets for the night so apply below.

This competition has now closed. Congratulations to our winner Shauna Carbery, have a great time.
