R Kelly @ Manchester Apollo Theatre
Date: Saturday 23 April
Doors: 7pm
Music: R&B, Soul, Live
Price: £32 approx
Let’s not beat about the bush, Robert Sylvester Kelly is a controversial character. When accused of having relations with underage girls in 2002, he responded by developing a Pied Piper-esque masked image in several of his music videos. When acquitted in 2008 and asked in a televised interview whether he liked teenage girls, a 41-year-old R Kelly replied “I have some 19 year old friends”.
But it cannot be denied that he is also a musical genius. This is the man that, to name a few, wrote ‘I Believe I Can Fly’, ‘Ignition (Remix)’, ‘She’s Got That Vibe’, ‘Gotham City’, ‘The World’s Greatest’, Michael Jackson’s ‘You Are Not Alone’, and the greatest slow jam of all time ‘Bump and Grind’. And who can forget the hilarious but epic ‘Trapped In The Closet’ video saga?
Very rarely in the UK, due to his fear of flying, Kelly postponed his last appearance in Manchester, but Saturday’s show is all set to go down. Expect him to squeeze in as many of his award-winning hits as possible, performed in R Kelly’s trademark pitch-perfect vocal style.
