BBC Philharmonic play Italian classics

The BBC Philharmonic will treat audiences to a double bill of opera house and concert hall classics at an Italian-themed evening at the Bridgewater Hall on 11 October.

Led by conductor Gianandrea Noseda, they will play Respighi’s three beautifully descriptive pieces: 'Fountains of Rome', 'Roman Festivals' and 'Pines of Rome'. The latter, with its dramatic brass playing, is particularly effective in the huge auditorium of the Bridgewater Hall. It is expected to be an electrifying performance.

As well as the orchestral pieces, there will be appearances by some outstanding opera singers. Soprano Kristine Opolais will sing Verdi’s 'Willow Song' and 'Ave Maria'. She'll then be joined by Laura Giordano, Tomislav Muzek and Franco Vassallo for a performance of the closing scene from Act 3 of Puccini’s romantic La Bohème.

The BBC Philharmonic is based at the BBC on Oxford Road and gives 20 concerts a year at the Bridgewater Hall. It is an internationally renowned orchestra, well-known for its passionate and virtuosic performances. Gianandrea Noseda is the orchestra’s Italian chief conductor.

The concert takes place on Saturday 11 October at 7pm. Prices start at £9. For more information and to buy tickets go to: www.bridgewater-hall.co.uk
