All Around the World

Blackburn record label loves up the towns and moors

Published on May 29th 2008.

All Around the World

Pennine Lancashire conjures up an image of hills and rolling country, but down in the valleys lie necklaces of towns and villages. The biggest of these is Blackburn.

Perhaps the ancient Lancastrian names such as Blackburn, Darwen and Oswaldtwistle conjure images of backwaters with as they might say up here 'nowt 'appenin'.

It is a place that has traded across the world for two hundred years so it's not surprising that a top dance label can be found right in the centre of town.

But this ignores the fact that Blackburn is multi-cultural town with several communities from around the world making up the population. It is a place that has traded across the world for two hundred years so it's not surprising that a top dance label can be found right in the centre of town.

Nor should it come as a surprise that it goes by the name of All Around the World. This is a company that likes it vigorous and loves it frisky. They like it hardcore too. Acts such as Scooter, Gusto, N-Trance, Blackout Crew and Perfect Day, together with a whole jukebox of compilations such as Clubland Classix, provide the backbeat to a generation of club-loving, sweat-breaking lads and lasses.

All Around the World are an active bunch indeed. Just look at the June dynamism.

Early in the month we get Scooter, 'Jumping All Over The World', Blackout Crew, 'Bbbbbounce' and the iTunes exclusive release of Paradise - See The Light. Then there's N-Force vs Darren Styles, 'Right By Your Side' and Hypasonic vs Jorg Schmid, 'It Doesn't Matte'r. These singles first see the light of day as digital pre-releases and then come out as CDs the week after. 2 June will see the back catalogue re-visited once more with a selection of huge club tracks that never proceeded beyond the promo stage. Deeper into June there's the debut album release from Darren Styles, Skydivin', a mix of hardcore dance and mainstream and slower tracks, spread over two CDs. Flamin' June indeed. And that's all in one month.

Pennine Lancashire you could say is getting the feet of the world tapping. This is completely appropriate. Evidence suggests that Lancashire clog dancing which developed in the cotton mills of the nineteenth century evolved into tap dancing. All Around the World, as their name suggests, has become a new global engine for party animal inspiration.

Nor does it have to be the case that Manchester or Liverpool, the big north western cities, always set the trends in the region. Think of Wigan Casino and the heady days of Northern Soul. All Around the World are another Lancashire town proving that the musical focus often lies elsewhere.
