Yves Saint Laurent dies

Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) has died in Paris following a long illness.

YSL has been credited by many leading fashion figures as the man who changed the way women dressed in the 20th century. This included apparent opposites such as emphasising the female form and also making womens' suits fashionable.

The news comes just a week after Naomi Campbell signed a deal to front the company's autumn/winter 2008 campaign. YSL was the first designer to use black models on the catwalks, so the signing is a huge honour for the famously troubled model.

YSL, a former head designer at Dior at the age of just 21, retired from designing in 2002, and had been ill for some years.

Manchester Art Gallery has some of Yves Saint Laurents work on display in their Costume Gallery.
