What's happening this weekend

Heather Smith tells you where to go, including a Viennese whirl, the Wirral Show and more cycling. Phew...

What's happening this weekend
Having a ball
TICKETS are still available at the Philharmonic Hall for 2009s glittering Summer ball in St George's Grand Hall which takes place this Saturday evening.

Following on from '08s successful series of splendid Viennese Balls, our neo-classical gem of a dancing venue will once more open its doors to the moving, grooving public.

Vasily will be conducting the RLPO. The Greg Francis Orchestra & Singers are also on board to tempt Ball-goers to do more than the seated toe-tap.

Setting the standard (not) will be TV's Strictly dancing duo Vincent and Flavia, the billed professionals who will no doubt be wowing to watch flying around the floor. The pair will have nothing, though, on the nimble but slighty craky Viennese waltzing couples that have booked on for a feel good evening.

*Summer Ball 2009, St. George's Hall, Saturday 11th July, 7pm, tickets £40-£50 with a VIP upgrade option for £25, visit the Philharmonic box office or call 0151 709 3789

Wheel love
FUN and competitive bike rides seem to be a weekend fixture lately, but none quite resemble the Critical Mass cycle which takes place on the second Friday of every month.

Cyclists, along with skateboarders, wheelchair users, rollerskaters and a selection of other self-propelled transport types, join forces to take a random route around the city in celebration of non polluting transport types.

Take your wheels down to Nelson Street and join the teatime spectacle at 6pm.

*Critical Mass Cycle Ride, Friday 10th July, 6pm, meet at Nelson Street by the Chinese Arch

Wirral Show
This weekend sees the 33rd Wirral Show take over 'the dips' at New Brighton. One of the biggest free to enter family shows in the country, the two-day show always delivers a full programme of events that range from motorbike displays to knitting stalls, funfair, candyfloss and ice cream to those games where the prize is a 6ft teddy, which once won, becomes an immediate burden.

Friday - 'Fright Night', introduced some years ago now - has also become quite a tradition. Extreme thrill seekers (or naive fools) fill up the fairground rides at a heavily discounted price, 'testing' all rides before the show officially begins. The choice is yours.

*Wirral Show, New Brighton, Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th July, from 10am daily, free.

Who is in charge of Petrenko's balls? It's a bit late to be advertising it now! Even if you have the cash lying about it'd be cutting it fine hiring a rig-out for the evening with a day's notice!

Just had a very enjoyable day at the Wirral Show thanks to this article. Top funfair. Makes me wonder what happened to the Liverpool Show, and also why this amazing two-day fairground attraction can't be staged over the whole summer holidays.
