Want the perfect cut?

Philip Hamer discovers the unique joys of Bespoke Tailoring at James Darby

Want the perfect cut?

Where is it?
James Darby
7 Oak St
Northern Quarter
Manchester

The History
Wakefield-born James Darby has been creating made-to-measure garments in his small shop in the Northern Quarter for the past four years. After gaining experience in various aspects of men’s clothes, manufacturing and retailing, he decided to branch out on his own. The derivation of the word 'bespoke' comes from the idea that a piece of cloth was spoken for by a customer, in other words allotted specifically to him. James will create a garment to the customer’s measurements and satisfaction at a fraction of London Savile Row prices. He alone will measure the customer and craft the garment.

Who Shops There?
Manchester United executives including ex Man Utd PR guru Paddy Harveson, who currently looks after HRH Prince of Wales, and Mani of The Stone Roses and Primal Scream.

What Does It Sell?
Anything from a made-to-measure shirt at £135 to a suit or an overcoat starting at £750. James is especially proud of his limited edition hand made scarves at £35 each. With the festive season looming these would be the perfect gift for the gent who claims he has everything.

Why Go There?
You will acquire a unique garment, a one-off design. You will be fully aware of its provenance and involved in every stage of its construction. Best local cotton sourced from nearby Nelson and Colne is used for shirts and you will also have personal collar and cuff fittings as part of the shirt’s construction process. According to James "the secret's in the stitching" and all buttons on garments are hand sewn.

The Future
James would like to flex his "designer" credentials and create a clothes collection of perhaps four garments and also has ambitious ideas for expanding the business.

Verdict
In a time of homogeneity in dress it has never been more appropriate to seek out a beautifully made unique garment. Clothes are also currently more tailored than they have been for some time and James’s skills will ensure that you receive an item created partly by yourself derived, perhaps, from the your personal role models. The clothes might be flamboyant but the prices charged here certainly aren’t - as a quick web search into the heart of prices charged in Savile Row and Jermyn St will reveal.
