Use your Head

Hats off to John Lewis as they demonstrate how to stand out in the crowd with their latest headwear for all you social butterflies.

Use your Head

The arrival of summer brings all those terribly pressing social occasions one simply must attend. What with the races, garden parties, christenings and weddings how can a girl about town make a real statement? The answer is easy - use your head.

Hats are bolder and bigger than before with colour and design throwing open the doors to a much more diverse clientele.

John Lewis at the Trafford Centre report a large upturn in hat sales recently as Manchester ladies go large on hats for the ‘Ascot season’. And it’s not just the races that hats are suitable for- it’s definitely wedding season again and a bold hat is the best way to stand out from the crowd (without upstaging the bride of course).

Fascinators (feather headdresses) are still flying in, but also witnessed is a return of the ‘big hat’ as women look to don a real style statement.

So how do you choose the perfect hat for you? The secret lies in your scale and opting for a creation that is in keeping with your own proportions. A huge hat can drown a small frame so a fascinator is a great option for the reet petite. If you are an average build- take your pick, downscale for a less bold look or upscale to a grand creation to add drama and a grand entrance

Colour wise, this season is all about impact and contrast. Big sellers are hot brights such as vibrant pinks and deep turquoises. Alternatively, there is a trend towards a sixties style monochrome look with black and white hats, which are sending tills ringing. Twin these with a bold coloured outfit for a really striking ensemble.

John Lewis Fashion Advisor Sarah Wells, based at the Trafford Centre store comments: “John Lewis has always been strong on hats. This season however, the ladies of the North West have really thrown themselves wholeheartedly into glamming it up in headwear of all shapes and sizes.”
