Urban X Results

Published on August 10th 2005.

Part of one of the most hectic weekends of the year in Manchester saw the Urban X event take over most of the city, with the Rat Race challenge sprawling 50km around the city, and the Bruntwood Aerial Assault hauling itself up and over some of the city’s buildings.

Piccadilly Gardens was the hub of most of the activity, climbing wall for the kids to practice on, a stage for some music, and a big screen to let everyone know what was going on. Although when I was there, there wasn’t much happening on the screen except for a good bit of advertising. It was a bit tricky to work out what was going on, particularly as there were no climbers scaling the heights of City Tower at the time. The feedback we have gained though has been positive, both novice and expert competitors found the courses challenging enough.

Rat Race

Our very own John Cunningham and his mentalist Manchester Confidential team of adventure racers made it through the Rat Race’s ‘secret’ course in an overall time of 9 hours and 42 minutes. The Rat Race took place over two stages, in a more complicated event than we can muster the energy to try and decipher. Suffice to say, it was a pretty tough challenge. The concept was certainly a refreshing one, and it was even more refreshing to see the council lending their support to the idea.

Results of the Rat Race:

Adventure Class

1. Saab Salomon – 4.49.02
2. SleepMonsters – 5.28.49
3. Team Ole Gunnar – 6.06.35
4. The North Face – 7.08.21
32. SALTy Girls – 14.14.02 (First all female team)

Rookie Class

1. The Fantastic Three – 1.32.11
2. The Lions Roar – 1.48.17
3. Pi Rat – 1.50.09
4. Cat Nap – 2.02.40 (First all female team)

The aerial assault was also taking place, a separate challenge whereby teams of climbers clambered over buildings like Square One, The library, The Printworks and City Tower.

Results of the aerial assault:

1 - Hard Grit - 862 points- £800
2 - Big Wall/Red Chilli – 783 points - £500
3 - Deep Water Babies 757 points £300
4 - Foundry /Crag X 746 points - £200
5 - Trad 707 points - £100

Three climbers managed to summit the finale climb of The Bruntwood City Tower. They were:

Nick Sellers, from Team Hard Grit, who won the contest
Neil Mawsen, from Team Traditional
Mike Weeks, from Team X1 Sports who raced with Jack Osbourne
