If you go down to the Arndale this Monday, you may be forgiven for thinking that you’ve wandered into a set from the Wizard of Oz. No, it won’t be amok with munchkins (as far as we know) – but children from schools across Greater Manchester have been hard at work creating colourful and vibrant art work which will be exhibited for two weeks - just what we need to lighten the gloomy January days!
The artwork has been produced in association with the Together Trust, Manchester’s oldest and largest children’s charity, to celebrate its recent name change from the Boys and Girls Welfare Society.
You can find the colourful exhibition at Exchange Court, near the new Next, for two weeks from January 9th. Stressed out shoppers will be able to take time out from battling the crowds in the January sales to enjoy a selection of colourful cardboard sculptures and other spectacular artwork, created by Manchester children as well as by artist Philip Cox.
The Together Trust is the largest children’s charity in the North West. Rich in heritage, it has been providing care, education, support and improved life opportunities for young people in the region since it was established in 1870. Today, the charity helps more than 2000 children and young people each year, who are experiencing emotional, behavioral or social difficulties, physical and learning disabilities and autistic spectrum disorders.
The art portfolio will be built up throughout 2006, and will culminate in a major exhibition in the autumn. So make sure that you manage to take time out from shopping (or wander down on your lunch break) at some point over the next couple of weeks to support the event.
