Thirsty Thursday get us buffed up

Published on June 17th 2004.

Career Polish – Instalment 1 “Contact”
Tuesday night witnessed the re-launch of Girl Power, seeing the first in a six part series of seminars designed for women to get what they want, when they want it.

The goddesses of women’s networking events, Thirsty Thursday, introduced us to Katrina Hewitson, no stranger to coaching at the highest board level, who gave an enthusiastic and enlightening talk focussing on the concept of maximising those first four minutes of an encounter and how to make the most of that first impression.
In between mouthfuls of delicious samosas and satays from the buffet and sips of ice cold Chardonnay, the session lay down the tone for the forthcoming ‘episodes’ with a quote;
‘The successful person in the future will be a media age mercenary: female, single with an email directory to die for.’ (Richard Scase: Britain 2010)
Increasingly woman are taking hold of their own careers by the horns, starting their own businesses and realising that attention to personal skills and the ability to network and realise available resources is a way of securing this success.
This was certainly reflected at our meet at Tiger Tiger, the room positively buzzed with curiosity, questions were raised and solved, concepts discussed and real life experiences were exchanged.

We took a journey through why contact is important, the stages of contact, cortical inhibition and facilitation (what! You don’t know what that is? Where have you been…?) , making the most of a first meeting, ensuring clarity and how to construct your story to ensure you come across as a sparkling individual that people wish to meet again!
So are you a stunner? Sunshine & Substance? Or perhaps you are an Energy Eater? Which persona is best to carry off for a first encounter? How can a few carefully timed comments ensure an enthralled audience? Mmmmm we know!
Ever considered your job title? Another crafty tip to remember is the ‘verb + noun rule.’ So instead of Internet Marketing Manager, I would say; “I facilitate SMEs online capacity and marketing reach to potential customers” – and boy, do I sound fantastic!
The night paved the way what promises to be an unmissable series of seminars for today’s career-minded go-getter female!
Full of delicious munchies, a few glasses of wine and my mind and notepad full to the brim with delicious snippets of knowledge, my phone buzzed with a new message. My boyfriend: just checking I didn’t utilise any of my new found confidence on the way home. See ladies, we’ve already got them nervous!
The next session, 1st July at Tiger Tiger (6.30-8pm) is called Connected and focuses on how to maximise your relationships. For more information on the sessions, or to book your place click here.
