The Chapel Street Pub Walk – Thursday 8 October, 6pm

A Manchester Confidential Tour takes in four boozers and daft stories

Published on October 7th 2009.

The Chapel Street Pub Walk – Thursday 8 October, 6pm

Tomorrow sees a guided tour across the border starting in Manchester and carousing into Salford.

A comforting thought is while most guided tours of Manchester and Salford are all about the guests listening to the guide out on the streets, in the cold; this is the only tour where you cosy down in a pub.

And the best thing is you get to drink beer. Or wine. Or lemonade. Or heaven forfend, water.

Yep this is a pub tour, looking at classic hostelries and the crazy stories associated with them. It will be informative, entertaining and on occasion astonishing. The route takes in a Manchester pub first and then three Salford establishments.

This tour takes place during the Manchester Food and Drink Festival but forget the food, the emphasis will be very much on drink.

A comforting thought is while most guided tours of Manchester and Salford are all about the guests listening to the guide out on the streets, in the cold; this is the only tour where you cosy down in a pub. Even better you enjoy a drink and are royally entertained with the ludicrous and hilarious story of city drinking over the last three hundred years.

And you might win something too. There’s a fun quiz of a eight questions based on the commentary at the end of the tour – so not one of those three sheets of A4 pub quizzes with algebra, isometric tests and questions on American baseball players. That would get in the way of the narrative, so to speak.

What hopefully you won’t end up doing is looking like these gents and young gents on Deansgate in 1880 in our picture here.

Meet: 6pm, 8 October, Manchester Visitor Information Centre, St Peter’s Square. Tour lasts up to 2 hours. Price £6 (concessions £5), pay on the day.
