Summer on the Mal Terrace

For a lazy summer vibe head to the Malmaison's terrace

Published on July 8th 2010.

Summer on the Mal Terrace

When summer comes to town, there are certain places that become overrun with people seeking a place to enjoy an alfresco drink. The beer gardens of some pubs and bars look like a Spanish beach at the height of holiday season with everyone jostling to secure their spot in the sun.

This is a sexy, stylish place to catch the sporting action or catch up with friends. Make the most of it while the summer lasts.

If you want a more chilled-out place to sip your drink and soak up the atmosphere of the city in summer, the terrace at the Malmaison Hotel, Piccadilly, is a good option.

The Moulin Rouge-esque Mal Bar has a reputation for dangerously good cocktails, which are perfect for sipping outdoors on the terrace as you watch the world go by. Their Kir Royale, made with Veuve Clicquot, impressed our some-time cocktail reviewer Thea Euryphaessa, who crowned it the best in Manchester. The bar's mixologists put as much care and creativity into all their creations. Head there for an early evening drink in the sun with friends.

The food menu has plenty to impress as well. Lazy lunches and evening meals range from light bites such as an artisan cheese and charcuterie platter to bigger dishes such as haddock fish fingers with mushy peas and tartare sauce. The Mal's kitchen consistently gets great reviews so expect something special. Their 'hot dog and coleslaw' might sound like something your mum served at your eighth birthday party, but we assure you, it'll be a cut above. There's also sandwiches, salads, sides and sweet treats, such as strawberries and cream, and banana split.

On Sundays, you can eat your roast dinner on the terrace. The Toast to the Roast promotion is a great way to get a first-rate Sunday dinner for a good price: soup, Sunday roast, and half a bottle of house wine for just £15 per person. It's a lovely way to wile away a summer Sunday.

It's worth mentioning that the Mal Terrace is one of the few outdoor drinking areas in Manchester to have a big screen which shows the major sporting events. And this being a rather swish boutique hotel, you won't be surrounded by heavily tattooed lads whipping their t-shirts off as soon as the sun comes out. If it does happen to rain half way through play, the giant parasols will protect you from the elements.

This is a sexy, stylish place to catch the sporting action or catch up with friends. Make the most of it while the summer lasts.
