Spring into new season fashion

The sales rails are slowly clearing and the excitement of new collections is coming through, Kathryn Whittaker gives us a heads up on the freshest looks for this spring’s key trends.

Spring into new season fashion

There are some really fab collections around for spring and even at this early stage, we are seeing some great patterns and colours emerging, plus some more interesting looks. So to make it simple, I’ll give you my top four and some easy ideas on how to wear them.

Sporty Chic:

This spring sees sportswear take on a new, more sophisticated look for everyday smart casual. Now, I’m not talking baggy jogging pants and hoodies here, more city chic silhouettes with sporty influences. Think toggles on fitted jackets, polo shirts over vests and sweat pant stripes on sleek trousers. This is a fun style to play with but don’t go overboard as you may find yourself more sporty spice than sporty chic. Try H&M for sporty inspired suiting or Stella Mc Cartney for some great slouchy tops.

80’s:

Well it doesn’t seem that a season goes by that the 80’s doesn’t inspire some sort of spin off look and this year is no different. Leggins and footless tights have been littering the high street for a while now and yes, they are still around for Spring 07. But now the biggest 80’s influence around is in colour. Yes, we all remember spraying our hair fluorescent green, pink or blue and I am not advocating this at all, but you will be bombarded by big bold bright day-glo colours come February. Not the easiest colours to wear if you’re a shrinking violet but why not go mad with some feisty fluorescent footwear - Dorothy Perkins have wedges to make any wild child proud.

Pattern:

“Help,” scream most of us when faced with a shop full of pattern. But this season it is back and in a big way. So what better time to ditch the black and switch to swirls! Oasis, Monsoon and Principles have all embraced the patterned smock worn over leggings, slim leg trousers or jeans. Shoes and accessories are a great place to start with Faith leading the way with their floral print heels and abstract patterned bags by Nica are this seasons hottest look, perfect for lifting even the plainest of outfits.

Metallic:

Go for gold….or silver, bronze or pewter…in fact any metallic shade. Maybe it’s part of the 80’s comeback but metallics are going it alone as their very own trend this spring. Shine in batwing metallic tops from Warehouse or sequinned shiny shift dresses from French Connection. Again, as always, even a bag or shoes is a great place to start. Try M&S Limited Collection for a very sophisticated take on this easy to go OTT look.

Now off you go to scour the high street! Enjoy playing with the new collections, don’t spend too much at once and most importantly HAVE FUN!
