Spirit of the Blitz Club - Wednesday 22 July

New Romantic night launches at the Northern Pub on Tib Street

Spirit of the Blitz Club - Wednesday 22 July
New Romantics will take over the Northern Pub on Tib Street for a dance and '80s themed quiz on Wednesday.

This is an opportunity to go along all made up and re-live (if you were around then), or re-create (if you weren’t), a time when glamour ruled the dancefloor. Should be great. Or at least very Steve Strange.

There'll be a prize for the best New Romantic outfit. Quiz prizes include 5 tickets for A Night at the Museum (a massive mad September party), a bottle of champagne and vouchers to that delightful emporium Rags to Bitches.

Music will include all the tunes from the golden era of nonsense pop, with the DJ wearing make-up, drinking pretentious cocktails and playing records – while pretending to be seventeen again. Wine will be at Happy Hour prices.

The organisers are Simon Buckley, proprietor of Rags to Bitches, and John Locke, boss of the Northern.

Buckley’s claim to New Romantic fame was that he made it into an Ultravox video for about two minutes. Locke’s New Romantic moment of glory came with the fortnightly slog to sign on in full regalia in Shotton, North Wales. He still can’t believe he missed a beating from the steelworkers.

This event is in aid of Barnado's charity and if it goes well will be repeated.

Related to The Spirit of the Blitz is The Night at the Museum event hence the tickets as prizes. This will be ‘an extraordinary night of fashion, music and weird animals’. It’s a charity ball also in aid of Barnado's and will feature a cocktail and canape reception, live music, special guests, polar bears, fairground stalls, Egyptian mummies, a treasure hunt, charity auction, T-Rex, dancing and much, much more, all amongst the splendid surroundings of the Manchester Museum. The event takes place on 13 September from 7.30pm to midnight.

First up, though it’s the New Romantics on Wednesday: an opportunity to go along all made up and re-live (if you were around then), or re-create (if you weren’t), a time when glamour ruled the dancefloor. Should be great. Or at least very Steve Strange.
