Spice Up Your Spring Wardrobe!

So in the past couple of weeks we've had snow, ice, wind and rain, but spring is definitely on the way… in fashion terms anyway! Last time we covered the key themes that are hot for spring/ Summer 06 so this week I thought I'd look at the key items for your fresh as a daisy lightweight wardrobe. Think of it as my gift to you - a head start on all those fights over 'this seasons must haves' on the high street!

Now that the tired looking sales rails are being banished from shop floors across the country, we can look forward to the new season trends gracing our high streets in the coming months. For the next few weeks we will be looking at the must haves for Spring/ Summer 06, kicking off with the key themes for the coming season.

Key looks for Spring/Summer 2006: Your Wardrobe Basics:

Dresses are back in a big way and really are the key look for the coming season, in silhouettes that veer from sleek shirt styles and chic shifts to delicate baby dolls. It comes in every shape imaginable this season from strapless tulips to shirt waisters. This example is from Calvin Klein but expect a million copies to flood the high street over the coming weeks.

We had it for winter and its still around for Spring- the classic trench gets lighter in both fabric and colour to become your summer staple. There are plenty around on the high street with influences taken from the designers. This look is straight off the Dior catwalk, designed by John Galliano. Experiment with the new duster style and Sixties shapes for evening.

Forget the skirt- if its smart city wear you're after shorts are the new staple. It may sound scary but actually they are very comfortable and pretty practical too. They don't have to be bum skimming a la Beckham and Moss- any length goes as long as they are clean, crisp and tailored. This look was seen at the Frost French show and forms one of the key looks of their collection.

If shorts really aren't your bag then fear not there is still the trouser. This season they take on three key looks; luxe and loose, think wide legs, soft fabrics and relaxed styles. This was captured perfectly in the Emporio Armani show- a really easy style to wear. Sailor smart - this is the ultra crisp straight, clean option, or rock-star skinny- two words - BE CAREFUL! This is not the best option if, like me, you carry your weight around your bum or hips, it's a strictly straight legs look.

The key words here are big, bold and bright! Bags are outsized or detail-heavy, sunglasses are bold and bug-eyed, wide belts cinch the waist and shoes play to colourful, quirky extremes.

Statement accessories grab the limelight this season in a big way. A word of caution though- what is large scale for some, is not always large scale for others. If your own scale is small opt for smaller sized accessories or they may drown your small frame. These Marni glasses are a typical look for this season - expect high street copies a plenty!

There is plenty of variety when it comes to your top half this season, with draping, checks and ruffles all making a comeback. The key look for spring though is the simple white shirt. This one is from Paul Smith. From sexy dress shirts to pretty smocked styles, this classic piece comes in many delightful guises and really will be forever a style staple. Remember to keep your whites crisp and clean- try accessorizing with a waist sincher belt for sexy, more feminine look.

So ladies, there you have it- your key directions for your wardrobe staples. Hope it's been useful. Next time I will be showing you where to get this seasons key pieces on the high street. So get in training for your spring wardrobe big shop!
