Something for the weekend...yet again

Hugh and yours
The children of rock and roll never grow old, they just fade away. Well their follicles might, but they still keep on going. Just look at Mick Jagger.

The antithesis of the Rolling Stones and all that was, of course, punk, and during his 17 years as frontman of the legendary band The Stranglers, Hugh Cornwall and co experienced worldwide stardom and had massive hits with classics like Peaches (after whom Bob and Paula named a daughter), Duchess, Strange Little Girl, and that one about Gordon Brown.

Since Cornwall started his solo career he has continued this success story releasing six albums. This tour with a ful band is to promote his latest Hooverdam.

Anyway, he's on at the Brindley in Runcorn tonight, so don't just Walk on By.

Full Spectrum
Many people remember Sonic Boom, fewer remember Spacemen 3 but for Pete Kembers these days it's all about Spectrum.

The band still boast that illusiveness, that hypnotic Fab Cafe feeling which has defined their predecessors but somehow they have managed to conventionalise, albeit slightly. Either that, or over time pop has just got weirder.

Anyway, Spectrum are due to arrive down by the docks on Friday for an exciting gig at Waterloo Road's Static Gallery. Expect a selection of tracks from Spectrum's forthcoming April album to feature in the play list, which combined with a few from latest effort, Indian Giver, should prove to be a rare and unmissable gig treat.
*Spectrum @ the Static Gallery, Waterloo Road, L3, Fri 13th Feb, 7.30pm, tickets £10, available from Probe Records.

Do the meths
Poetry can be pretty romantic. But why get your pad and pencil out when you can pay for first class aural stimulation that is both figurative and funny?

As it goes, acclaimed stand-up comedian come composer Keith Wilson suggests that you'll be desperate to scribble down his more serious stanzas when he takes centre stage with his band Methylated Spiritualists at the Unity this Saturday. These cocky musical types. He's even one of those who swears blind he is 'unpigeonholeable.' Which surely is a pigeonhole in itself these days.

Forgiving him this, Wilson seems to have received rave reviews for these random poetic ramblings and when a chap has managed to support Blondie, Elvis Costello and Paul Weller, he's got to be worth checking out.

Boxed Off
Having trouble coaxing birds to your place? Fret no more, a team of Ornithologists are on hand this Sunday to offer more than a few top tips.

The all-embracing workshop will help you plan and build the perfect hotbed-nest that will have birds all but queuing up to stay the night. Albeit in the back garden.

According to the BTO, a small box with a hole may bag you a Great Tit but if you're prepared to go open fronted, expect anything from Pied Wagtails to Spotted Flycatchers. Crikey.

Do spare a thought for the feathered folk, searching far and wide for suitable nesting sites and take part in Boxed Off, the family event taking place at Wirral Country Park this Sunday afternoon.
*Boxed Off @ Wirral Country Park, Sun 15th Feb, 2pm, free, call 0151 648 4371 to book a place.
