Something for the Weekend Sir?

Published on January 23rd 2006.

The story of Sweeney Todd, the infamous Barber of Fleet Street, who mercilessly slit his victims’ throats and then delivered their bodies to his landlady to make meat pies from their flesh, is coming to Manchester’s Opera House next month, with the dark and twisted lead role played by none other than everybody’s favourite neighbour, Jason Donovan.

Fresh from a stint in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the London palladium, and with his technicolour dreamcoat now a distant memory, Jason will be taking on a slightly more sinister role in this new broadway production of Stephen Sondheim’s classical musical Sweeney Todd.

The cast will also include Harriet Thorpe as the gruesome pie maker Harriet Lovett, Oliver Beamish as ‘Judge Turpin’, Peter Head as ‘Beadle Bamford’, Joanna Hickman as ‘Johanna’, Gemma Page as ‘Beggarwoman’, James Spilling as ‘Tobias’ and Susannah van den Berg as ‘Pirelli’.

The story of Sweeney Todd follows the vengeful and amoral barber of Fleet Street as he murders his vulnerable customers with a razor blade before dispatching their remains through a trapdoor to be turned into a tasty meat pie by his landlady. The story has been thrilling audiences for two centuries, and now Jason Donovan is picking up the razor and stepping into the barber’s bloodstained shoes to terrify the good people of Manchester. Yes that’s right – ‘Jason Donovan’ and ‘terrify’ in the same sentence.

Sweeney Todd will be arriving in Manchester on 27 February and will be seen plotting his grisly course there until March 6th as part of a 12 week national tour. Tickets are priced from £10 to £27, to reserve tickets call the box office on 0870 401 9000.
