Something for the Weekend (15-17 August 08)

Above the Beaten Track
OUR Vinnie's Culturepool organisation is celebrating its second birthday in style this weekend with an impressive line-up at the sleek View Two Gallery, Mathew Street. Boasting more than 30 acts, the event, Above the Beaten Track is an antidote to the Mathew Street Festival where you can enjoy the music of local talented musicians but without the crowds (and Beatle wigs!).

Featuring Tom George, Ragz (pictured), Strawhouses, Kaya, Dan Wilson from The Cubical, Alun Parry and many, many more, The weekend is being presented by Mellowtone and along with the acoustic talent, expect a chill out calm zone, the Saturday night hoe-down with DJs and a stack of stunning visuals to boot.

The fun begins daily at 2pm and depending upon what you get talking about and/or how merry you get, it could go on until god knows when. So get chatting and get involved in Liverpool’s biggest arts and culture members group.

Above the Beaten Track @ The View Two Gallery, Mathew Street, Sat 16th and Sun 17th Aug, doors 2pm, weekend pass £5, day pass £4 (£3 concs) www.myspace.com/

BTCV Natterjack Fencing
Fancy tickling your environmentalist desires hands on in a weekend project designed to save one of our most endangered species, the natterjack? Well, the conservation charity BTCV has teamed up with the Mersey Forest to give you this very opportunity.

By day you will be hammering and fence-fixing the natterjack toad pools of the Sefton coast, and come the night you are free to dive into the cultural extravaganza that is the pool of life.

You can try your hand at a single day or go for the full weekend experience. If this weekend is no good, fear not, there are similar opportunities on the way in the coming months.

The BTCV Natterjack Fencing at Formby, Sat 16th and Sun 17th Aug, the two-day experience costs £100 and £60 for the one day, to book click here or call 01772 204647

Proms in the Park
If you fancy ending Saturday night with fireworks (whilst watching a cracking concert) you will be delighted to hear that Proms in the Park are bringing their spectacular display back to Haydock Park Racecourse for the third year running.

"Prommers" are being advised to pack a picnic and cosy around for the evening’s entertainment which will be performed by the well established Northern Chamber Orchestra and conducted by the highly respected Edward Peak.

The event returns in celebration of the Wigan and Leigh Hospice’s silver anniversary. Get down there and wave your flags in support.

Proms in the Park @ Haydock Racecourse, St Helens, Sat 16th Aug, doors 4pm, entertainment begins at 6pm, tickets £20 adults, £10 children, to book in advance call 01942 402623 or click here

Honda Formula 4-Stroke Race Series
Speed fanatics will be out in numbers this weekend to watch as the Honda Formula 4-series get set to “tear up the waters” of our fair coastline. This Liverpool Grand Prix comes as the penultimate event before the championships begin in the Isle of Wight in September.

If we are to believe the rumors, eight-times Class One world champion and F4SA Series Director Steve Curtis will be present, eyeing up the latest talent, as it were. So bag your usual spot for waterfront action and from 10am; see if the Formula 4-Strokers really are as fast as they say.

Honda Formula 4-Stroke Race Series: the Liverpool Grand Prix @ Liverpool Waterfront, Sat 16 and Sun 17th Aug, 10am-2pm, free, visit www.f4sa.com
