Something for the Weekend (04-06 April 08)

Whether you're a nag or a thoroughbred, here's Ben's hot tips for the Grand National weekend

Published on April 3rd 2008.

Something for the Weekend (04-06 April 08)

Mellow, is it me you're looking for?
THIS Friday, the best place to get away from the throngs of Aintree revellers could well be the View Two Gallery where there will be a chilled out blend of American folk, ska, jazz and reggae served up. With great live acts and DJs to match, Mellowtone will do exactly what it says on the tin, if it were a tin.

Mellowtone @ The View Two Gallery, Mathew Street
Friday 4 April
Doors open 8pm
£4

Ladies Night, and the feeling's right
After having had a few scoops at Aintree, you may want to carry on the party in town. Noir on Victoria Street promises all guests are treated like VIPs and everyone's welcomed with a smile. If you want a refined night out or at least want to kid yourself that you're a little classy, this could be the venue for you. With full table service and DJs Nico and Robbie Blanco's spinning a blend of RnB, Funk and House, you'll be able to celebrate your National win in style - or more likely - commiserate your loss.

Take it as gospel
Who can forget Sister Act? A great film by any stretch of the imagination made all the better for those wonderful scenes of gospel singing. O Happy Day indeed.

This weekend you can experience a foretaste for the upcoming Gospel Festival in June. The Love and Joy Gospel Choir are spearheading a special fundraising concert that will raise funds for the festival in June which will include a huge street party.

Experience for yourself, the uplifting music of gospel and get yourself down to the Liverpool Lighthouse.

City Sings Gospel

Funky cold medina
Once again, the Magnet is one of the best places to visit if you want to listen to some good ol' funky tunes. With wily DJs and great live acts, the launch party of new night Mu should be funkier than a jockey's crotch. FoE will deliver a lively set of reggae, dub and hip-hop whilst Israeli band The Apples offer an energetic dose of funk having previously performed at the Jazz Café in Camden and the London Jazz Festival.

Mu & Magnet
