Ry Cooder plays Liverpool

Guitar legend in surprise gig at the Phil with Nick Lowe

Ry Cooder plays Liverpool

JULY is shaping up to be quite the month on the music event horizon in Liverpool, but it's not often you get a real biggie name that isn't, say, the homegrown Macca variety or a reformation. And after all there aren't many left.

But for all you musos out there, or the "just plain old curious to see a guitar legend proper", it's time to get the readies out. Ry Cooder is playing a surprise gig at the Philharmonic Hall on July 11. Tickets went on sale just this morning and they're not going to be around for long.

Cooder’s legendary slide guitar skills saw him play and record with Captain Beefheart, Taj Mahal and The Rolling Stones among many others in the 1960s. Rolling Stone magazine lists him in the Top Ten Greatest Guitarists of All Time.

But he was also responsible for the atmospheric and memorable soundtrack to the Wim Wenders movie Paris, Texas.

Cooder, in recent years, has played a role in the increased appreciation of traditional Cuban music as producer for the Buena Vista Social Club recording, which was a worldwide hit. Wenders directed a documentary film of the musicians involved which was nominated for an Academy Award in 2000.

This year Cooder gave two benefit performances with Nick Lowe at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco– featuring a selection of work from both their celebrated careers.

It was as a result of Nick Lowe’s recent appearance at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall that the invitation to him was made. They will be joined by his son Joachim Cooder on drums and vocalist Juliette Commagere.

Simon Glinn, executive director at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, said: “It’s a great pleasure to announce this very special show. Ry Cooder is not only one of the most distinctive, brilliant and influential guitarists of all time, but a great musical thinker and an artist we’ve been trying to get to Liverpool for several years now. I’m delighted it’s happening.”

Anyway, you won't find any mention of this rare appearance in the Phil's brochures, it's so last minute which, with four weeks to go, is rather rock and roll of them.

I'm there!

Wry not RyJune 15th 2009.

His guitar playing style is old hat. He has never produced a single memorable recording and remains distinctly low brow and disregarded by true geniuses like Noel Gallagher who considers him "an old fart"
