Return of the mac

Fashion has come a long way since the ‘pervert mac’. Kathryn Whittaker urges us to splash out on this season’s latest looks.

Return of the mac

With the heavens opening, now is as good as time as any to embrace one of this autumn’s hottest trends - the mac. And the great news is that there is tonnes of choice out there! Whether you’re into colours or neutrals, patterned or plain I have got something for you in my whistle stop selection of this season’s hottest outerwear.

A classic, neutral mac is a great key piece to have in your wardrobe at any time of year - especially when you need a shower proof option that won’t make you die from heat exhaustion! This one is from Wallis and costs £60. Try teaming it with a denim skirt and some cute boots for a chic and sassy look.

Bright and bold is big this autumn, so why not opt for an eye-catching coloured option. This trendy turquoise number is £60 from Red Herring at Debenhams and is bound to brighten up even the dullest of Manchester days. Its pleated design at the front and back of the waist create this seasons tulip shape design. Try wearing it with oversized beads, a dress and ballet pumps for an uber-trendy look to impress even the most fashion savvy.

Macs don’t have to be long, shorter styles are everywhere at the moment and create a fresh and funky silhouette. This double-breasted red option is just £45 from Limited Collection at Marks & Spencer and looks fantastic with these cropped trousers or a pair of wide legged full-length trousers and an oversized handbag. It’s great for those with tummies who may find the belted options less flattering.

If you really want to push the boat out this season, then go for real super glamour and eye catching design in your outerwear. This gorgeous number is from Missoni and costs £1,595. However, you really do get what you pay for with this one. The attention to detail is staggering, with embroidery stretching to every last inch of this garment. The piping and the pockets are well finished and the colours are rich and luscious. This mac will steal the show - so put it with whatever you like and look fabulous!

So there you go ladies. All you need to keep sheltered and stylish whatever the weather throws at you. Now, where’s my brolly?
