Ray, you're a brick

City's own X-Factor star tops the charts, enters the record books and joins the Wall of Fame, all in same day. Phew...

Ray, you're a brick

The big moment got a bit bigger for Ray Quinn this weekend when he came back to his hometown for a special Mother's Day appearance.

The 18-year-old took to the stage at The Cavern by announcing: “I’ve got some news for you. I’mNumber One, Baby,” moments after he heard that he had won the top slot in the UK album chart with his collection of swing covers.

And while the 18-year-old might have been a loser in the X-Factor, it didn't stop him from being honoured with his own brick in Mathew Street's Wall of Fame.

Gerry Marsden bimbled along for the brick-bedding-in ceremony to put Ray firmly in his place alongside elder statesmen in the mortar such as the Beatles, David Bowie and Elton John.

And the fun didn't stop there. Ray was then presented with a Guinness World Record for being the youngest male artist to enter the UK album chart at number one without actually even releasing a single.

“I've always wanted to be in the Guinness Book of Records,” he later remarked.

The former Brookie child star celebrated the news in the live show in front of a 140-strong audience, of mainly women and emotional young girls, which included his former co-star Claire Sweeney.

His self-titled album, recorded at LA's Capitol studios, the spiritual home of Frank Sinatra, trounced that of X-Factor rival Ben Mills who also released an effort this week.

After a performance which included Fly Me To The Moon, My Way and Mack the Knife, the Knowsley-born star chatted with excited audience members, including his own mum and girlfriend.

"I'm absolutely speechless. I can't believe my first album has gone to number one,” Ray mused.

"And I get to find out the good news on the day I can play The Cavern. It is amazing."

Bless.
