“Make a date or bring your date”. So the Tate cheekily suggests in its blurb inviting you back to its place, this Thursday.
They might be on to something. For the last Thursday evening of the month is upon us again, meaning Late At Tate night.
This is the third such occasion, and a very fine vibe there has been about the previous two. After all, most of the Late At Tates are free, the organisers have put a bit of thought into them, interesting types turn up at them and play records and things, and the star “turn” gets stuck in a goods lift half the night. Meanwhile, as the blissfully ignorant audience and staff wait, there is supping of Cains for free. And that was just last month.
This time, Late at Tate is inspired by the major re-hang of the Tate Collection which is being unveiled this month in a display called The Twentieth Century: How It Looked & How It Felt.
And so, this Thursday's event takes "the boys and girls of the twentieth century" as its starting point. That's them two in Rodin’s Kiss, and Andy Warhol’s merry entourage - Nico and the Velvet Underground - and a lot more. Including, it could be argued, us, you and anyone over the age of seven.
Jonathan Harris, director of the Centre for Architecture and the Visual Arts at Liverpool University, will lead a free tour entitled Figure It Out. He will take visitors between sculptures, painting, photography and installation featuring twentieth century figures in the Tate collection. Meet him by the Rodin at 6.30pm.
Earlier, at 6pm there will be a screening of The Chelsea Girls (1966) – Warhol's first major commercial success. Filmed in New York's now-rundown Hotel Chelsea (also Sid and Nancy's last chance saloon), it's a chance to see many of Warhol’s cronies-turned-superstars early on.
There will be a performance by reggae and soul musician Natty, whose influences include many great musical gods from way back then, and the Tate shop and cafe will be open late, too.
Throughout the evening, performance group English Eccentrics will present a series of impromptu ‘performances’ in unexpected places (our money is on that lift again), while the after-party rolls on to 3345, Parr Street - with or without them.
Did we mention the free beer?
