Outsider Art, the meal: the people

Jonathan Schofield thanks the philanthrophy of nine year old Carla Wolf for taking the photos at the recent Whitworth Art Gallery launch.

Outsider Art, the meal: the people

Confidential was at the launch of the ‘Intuition: Outsider Art’ exhibition recently at the Whitworth Art Gallery (click here for the review).

Philanthropy was the central theme though, because we need more of it, because the Whitworth was created through it, and because, with the donation of the collection by Monika Kinley, that’s what we were celebrating.

After the formal stuff a goodly number of the company, including me, were invited for a meal in the Whitworth’s lovely Gallery Cafe. Clearly there was a place or two going spare that needed filling.

I found myself sat between The Lord Mayor of Manchester, Councillor Mark Hackett, and Nick Merriman, the director of Manchester Museum - trying to fight them for the wine. It was a hot night we were thirsty. It was nothing to do with the alcohol.

Maria Balshaw, director of the Whitworth Art Gallery, and the best dressed art-boss in Britain, was also sharing the table along with the guest of honour, Monika Kinley, the kind donor of the Musgrave Kinley Collection that makes up 'Intuition: Outsider Art'. Sat with her were her two grand-daughters, one aged seven, Joanna Wolf, and one aged nine, Carla Wolf. Kate Farmery, from Manchester Art Gallery, and Sara Hilton from the Heritage Lottery Fund(the most popular person there) were also livening things up.

Good grace, wit, charm and easy smiles are part and parcel of Monika Kinley’s character - yet there’s also a welcome steeliness there, a sharp mind.

“We wanted to find space and put a light on the artists we collected,” she said during a break between courses. “We wanted to show the value of work outside the usual artistic circles.” The 'we' refers to her partner in collecting crime Victor Musgrave with whom she began collecting in the early 1980s. 'Outsider art' is work from individuals without formal training and outside the usually closed world of galleries. For the Whitworth to take in the collection and for Kinley to give it shows commitment in both directions.

Sat back down for the nosh, our side of the table enjoyed a chat about modern philanthropy, art, the state of the Manchester nation and football.

Philanthropy was the central theme though, because we need more of it, because the Whitworth was created through it, and because, with the donation of the collection by Monika Kinley, that’s what we were celebrating.

Nine year old Carla by this time was looking as though she needed something to keep her occupied. Armed with the Confidential camera she took over photography duties.

The following day I looked through the 3,200,000 shots Carla had taken. They were fabulous, so here’s a gallery of just a few of them.

Remember this girl was nine, but she was changing the settings and choosing the angles. Perhaps Confidential will have enough money to give her a photographer’s job in fifteen years or so. In the meantime, thanks Carla for your philanthropy in donating this portfolio of pictures to Manchester Confidential.
