Saints and Sinners: Sunday 7 June

Get out and about with the goodies, the baddies and the oddities of Manchester past and present

---------------------------------------

It starts with a painting - and ends with a hanging.

Manchester's newest guided tour takes you on a journey to meet a dozen Saints and Sinners.

This will be ninety minutes in which your heart will be warmed by tales of self-less generosity - and chilled by some of the darkest souls ever to darken our city.

You'll hear about a Saint in Waiting, quack doctors and a Victorian super-cop, Jerome Caminada. Visit the site of Manchester's filthiest slum, luckiest post box and unlikeliest chapel.

We've nuns and prostitutes, killers and martyrs in a distinctive look at the city's low lifes and high minds.

Manchester Trees Walk: Wednesday 10th June

Street trees and urban trees, natives and exotics. Good for shade, good to look good and with stories all of their own.

---------------------------------------

Manchester’s urban trees are like its urban people. They’re part of the city and they make it what it is, beautiful. We see them every day and we don’t see them at all. But they have their jobs to do and their centuries of history too.

This tour describes some of the individual species that decorate our streets. The route takes in Barbirolli Square with its graceful willows and the flames of hornbeam and oaks as upright as soldiers standing to attention. We’ll see the planes and limes of Albert Square and Turkish trees along Brazennose Street.

We’ll explore the trees histories, the best ones for making matchsticks, the best for firewood, the trees to feed to your cattle and the ones to use for making aeroplanes.

We’ll see trees which soak up carbon dioxide and can help to get us out of trouble or even shield our buildings from Manchester weather and to attract the bees back to our city centres.

The Trees Walk will also run Tuesday 23rd June 2pm and a (shortened version) will run as part of Manchester International Festival in July.

A true Manc. Black Poplars are characterful trees. They’re all males and lean as they get older. ‘Bout right.

Price and duration
The price is £6 per person as all official guided tours of Manchester are. £5 for concessions. The tour lasts two hours.
