MCFC kit gets a makeover

Confidential along with the rest of the country's media descended upon the Deaf Institute on Thursday for the unveiling of Manchester City's new kit. Sponsored by Umbro, the home, away and third kits mark a “long overdue” return to the Manchester City and Umbro partnership.

First supplying the club with kits in 1934, the same year they won the FA Cup, Umbro has incorporated their trademark understated and tailored aesthetic into the shirts' design, with a strong nod to the heritage of the brand and club. Held at The Deaf Institute, up and coming Manchester band Kid British played a fantastic three song set, despite the fact all but one support arch rivals Manchester United.

The kit was revealed to the awaiting throng of journos; the City supporters amongst us letting out a rapturous cheer. As a gesture to their new signing, 'Barry' was fitted to the back of the home shirt, again to the delight of said supporters.

Being the first club to benefit from the Umbro tailoring process, the kits have incorporated the elements from the past, with the away kit using Manchester's coat of arms – the Apis Millifera – as its muse.

Martin Prothero, Umbro's Senior Vice President of Football said, “This is an exciting opportunity for both Umbro and Manchester City FC to build on their collective heritage and create truly iconic modern football brands.

“MCFC will be the first club side to benefit from our tailoring process fir the 2009/10 season which means the best sportswear products for players and fans alike.”

Although not revealed at the launch, the 10 year deal is understood to be worth £25m with the North West sporting giant investing an additional £100,000 over the next three years; a move to inspire 'creativity across the city'.

David Pullan, Brand and Marketing Officer from Manchester City said “This partnership will help both MCFC and Umbro to cement their places at the very heart of the city of Manchester and to continue to grow in prominence across the globe.”

The MCFC home kit will be on general sale from Saturday 18 July, pre orders available now from www.mcfc.co.uk

The away kit and third kit will be available at a later date.
