Local Artist Launches Elements Exhibition

Published on January 12th 2005.

Local artist Mel Brown is exhibiting her latest collection of paintings at Manchester’s Blyth Gallery throughout January.
Mel Brown’s recent abstract works have titles like Strawberry Shortcake and Chocolate Icing. First the bad news. Before you get too excited and start clammering with around the paintings with knife and fork in hand, you can’t actually eat them. The good news is that you can still look at the works, described in her own words as “peaceful yet bold..” and “ a chance to see the world through my own eyes.” She uses tiny glass beads and smothers sand into the acrylic for effect
The exhibition is made all the more remarkable because as an up and coming artist, Mel is partially colour blind. The paintings give access to a world of restricted colours and shades using subtle greys, creams and blacks, often contrasting with fluorescent pinks and purple, but usually using no more than two colours at a time in any of her paintings. Mel says: “If I see a speck of colour it affects the entire painting.
Mel paints from memory and imagination, taking inspiration from the sea and sky. She’s even developed her own trademark white horizontal lines which dissect the canvasses, as you can see in the pictures. Mel said: “I’d like to think that in years to come people will see one of my paintings with the white line going across and say that’s a Mel Brown.”
Denise Thornton, Gallery Director at the Blyth Gallery is keen to showcase more innovative exhibitions such as this. She said: “Every month we have something different. We like to have interesting, dynamic and ecclectical exhibitions.”
The Elements exhibition can be viewed from Tuesday 11th January to Saturday 5th February 2005 open Monday to Friday from 10am to 5pm and Saturdays 11am to 3pm.
