Huey's The Man?

Po Na Na has upped the ante for some of the smaller Manchester clubs by managing to get in some bigger names than just those around the usual DJ circuit, and managed to pull off a bit of a blinder by getting Fun Lovin' Criminal Huey Morgan down to their Charles Street venue.

The Manchester Confidential crew, having been a bit couped up indoors lately, responded to the invitation to get themselves down to the night. Strutting down the street Reservoir Dogs style, not exactly in suits, anticipation set in at meeting the Tarantino-inspired Fun Lovin' Criminal (Quentin even co-wrote the Fun's debut album 'Come Find Yourself').

Huey turned up at around 11 with a bunch of security guards, not that he probably needs them – Huey ran off to join the marines after a judge gave him the ultimatum to do just that or go to prison. Joe Foster, manager at Po Na Na, takes a fair amount of credit for keeping the excitement to the dancefloor – even though Huey spent most of the night gleefully shaking people’s hands and being gawped at by a particularly scary pair of potential stalkers, everything was kept in check, even a slight malfunction to Po Na Na’s camera was overcome.

The music was great from start to finish. Not sure if it was all Huey’s choices, but a decent mix of indie, rap and heavy metal kept everyone dancing until gone 3 in the morning, way past our bedtimes, particularly on a school night. But anyone who’s going to follow the Stone Roses and the Smiths with Run DMC and Guns N Roses is well worth staying out to hear / dance / singalong to.

Huey mixed up a version of Love Unlimited, the Fun Lovin’ Criminals tribute to Barry White, the only reference to his own band (an airing of The Fun Lovin' Criminal, Scooby Snacks or King of New York might have seen the two stalkers storm the DJ box). The rest of the set resembled what might have been played at the indie night anyhow, but the presence of Huey behind the decks added a distinct aroma of coolness.

Po Na Na’s has always been a nice little venue, some of us can remember going there many moons ago, and the two floored venue’s not even getting as completely rammed as it used to. Yes you still have to navigate your way past through the cavernous low ceilings and tight corners to get to the loo, but this is all part of the fun, and you’ll usually find someone interesting to stop off and talk to at one of the chicanes if you’re not too desperate on the way too. You'll never know who you're going to bump into next around one of the corners - ex-Norwich City midfielder Matthew Rush for example.

It’s a testament to Huey’s swagger that he remains one of the coolest stars of the music world, able to attract the large young crowd that was on show here, despite the band’s recent output having ‘gone downhill a bit’. This might be why Huey has turned his hand at a few live sets with fellow partner in crime DJ Mateo, a regular on the decks in New York at the likes of Bed and Bungalow 8. This way, Huey’s sure to keep his face known, but he has little to worry about, the Fun Lovin’ Criminals have a pretty dedicated set of followers over in the UK, unlike in the US where they remain almost unknown.

Nice enough to pose for a photo and a chat at the end of the night with us as well…
