Hoist up your togas

Kathryn Whittaker’s guide to becoming a Grecian goddess

Published on April 4th 2008.

Hoist up your togas

One of this season’s hottest looks is that of the Grecian goddess, but if armour plated bras and drafty togas aren’t really your bag then take a look at these goodies to bring out the warrior princess in you.

Toga to die for:
Katie Holmes and Jennifer Lopez are just a couple of the starlets gracing the red carpets in this spring’s togatastic styles. For this look think neutral tones and swathes of fabric that gift-wrap your body in a relaxed and feminine fashion. Be careful not to drown yourself in baggy styles, instead go for something like this empire line option from www.asos.com. It’s just £35 and looks fab teamed with some chunky wedges and wooden accessories.

Warrior sandals:
If the all over toga is a little too much for you, then why not let your feet do the talking. Warrior sandals have been around for a couple of seasons now and celebs such as Sienna Miller and Mischa Barton are firm followers. The masculine feel of this footwear means it is essential that it is worn with a more feminine outfit. Try Primark and Warehouse for some of the best floral tea dresses around. These little beauties are from Moda in Pelle and are £50. My top tip is to go for a neutral colour so that it will mix and match with all the soft summer shades in your wardrobe.

Metallic minx:
Accessories are a great way to achieve an up-to-date look with minimum effort and the Grecian style is no exception. Go for oversized bushed metallics and think chokers, medallions and cuff bracelets. Gold is better if your skin has a yellow tone to it and silver if your appearance is a little pinker. This stunning coin statement necklace is £18 from Accessorize and would look fab worn with any of this season’s soft mix tops or dresses.

Top it off:
For a more relaxed look try a tunic style top with Grecian style details. Pop it with some skinny jeans or a wide leg linen trouser and metallic flip-flops for a funky daytime look. This nifty neutral number is £28 from Top Shop, but check out Monsoon and Miss Selfridge for similar styles. So girls grab your shield and hit the shops. The key to this look is not to go overboard with it. Choose one of the above and mix it into your existing styles. If you go head to toe, just beware that you run the risk of being grabbed as a roman guide around Chester.

Enjoy

Kathryn
