Happy 20th to the Cornerhouse

Published on October 6th 2005.

In the year that brought us important historical events such as Live Aid and Back to the Future, Manchester breathed a sigh of relief as its grim-up-north reputation was given a kick up the backside by the opening of a centre that would bring cutting edge art, culture and cappuccino to the city.

The Cornerhouse, hangout for Manchester’s cool kids since 1985, is celebrating its 20th birthday in October and to celebrate is hosting an entire month of celebrations.

Culminating in the opening of a major new exhibition by renowned filmmaker and artist Pat O’Neill, the month long birthday celebration will include gala screenings of memorable films, and special one off events.

The Cornerhouse first opened its doors on October 3rd 1985 and has since built an international reputation for excellence and innovation, playing a key part in Manchester’s revamp from grim to groovy over recent years.

With three floors of contemporary art galleries, three cinema screens, a bar, café and a bookshop, the Cornerhouse attracts a mixed crowd of young and old alike.

Famous faces to have popped up in the bar over the years include Quentin Tarantino, Steve Coogan, Eric Cantona, Liam Neeson, Helen Mirren, Derek Jarman, Julie Christie and the cast of the League of Gentlemen.

Throughout October, there will be a series of one-off live music and performance events in gallery three – check out the events listing for full details. In addition, there will be special exhibitions on in the galleries that document the Cornerhouse’s development and its contribution to the North West over the past 20 years.

It seems fitting that the birthday celebrations should come about in the same year as Live 8 – Bob Geldof’s brainchild being another institution that has evolved to be still at the forefront of modern culture after 20 years. Unfortunately, we can’t really say the same for Marty McFly’s silver Delorean. Sigh.
