Believe it or not, Girl Power wasn't originally a wet dream that Spice Girls puppet master Simon Fuller once had. Way back in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, Emmeline Pankhurst and pals were campaigning for power for the ladies, and they had a slightly more pushing agenda than getting a number one record.
On this walking tour, blue badge guide Jean Bailo will introduce you to the city's radical- thinking women who inspired their fellow females to take up the call for equal rights.
Says Jean: “The walk focuses on Manchester women who had the courage and strength of conviction to make their way in a man's world, whether they were penning a bestseller, organising an eighteenth-century mail order catalogue, or building some of Manchester's most memorable buildings. The city's women have always been a feisty lot – they had to be to cope with all those Manchester radicals.”
The Girl Power, Manchester Style walk will take place on 17 September. It starts at 10.30am at the Tourist Information Centre in St Peter's Square and ends in the city centre. Tickets cost £5. Call 07812 129 754 for more information.
