Ghostly Goings On At the Opera House

Published on January 4th 2006.

Four things you should never bring up at a wine-fuelled dinner party - Religion – you’re sure to offend someone; Politics – you’ll never agree; ‘where does space end?’ – you’ll drive yourself mad; and the existence of ghosts.

It’s very easy to fall into a long, long argument about ghosts – but you’ll never convince a cynic – or a believer – to change their minds, regardless of the amount of unexplained evidence, strange happenings or scientific fact that you can throw at them.

Me, I think I’m a bit of both. A little cynical of some ‘evidence’ but very open to the possibility of things that go bump in the night (and I don’t mean me falling out of bed after a few too many malibus). I think I’d like to experience something myself really before I could be convinced – well, I say that now…

This month, Manchester will be visited by Most Haunted’s Derek Acorah who will be bringing his spiritual mediumship to the Opera House on the 12th and 13th of January. No doubt he’ll be picking up on lots of residual energy (perhaps floating down the road from the spooky Brannigans building) and hopefully he’ll get possessed a couple of times just to keep the crowds entertained. Despite his sometimes over the top theatricals, the man is usually spot on with the information that he picks up from places and people, and he has induced some hide-behind-the-settee moments (or is that just me?) on Most Haunted. I’m sure we all remember Brannigans’ bell tower. Shudder.

Anyway, with the supernatural world’s favourite bleach-blond scouser gracing our city this month, we thought it was a good time to open the ghost debate. What do you think? Do ghosts exist? Do you have any ghost stories of your own, or any experiences that you just can’t explain? Or even better – have you captured anything ghostly with your camera?

Send us your stories and opinions by filling in the form below or click here to email us any pictures, and if you know of anywhere haunted in Manchester let us know and we may just bravely venture down and check it out for ourselves!
