GUIDEBOOK | Manchester: The Complete Guide Out Now

Manchester, the Complete Guide is out now.

‘A new Manchester guidebook, more loving than any Baedeker, more knowing than any Fodor and loads funnier than any Rough Guide to anywhere.’

It is written by Manchester Confidential editor, Jonathan Schofield, who says: "There was a gap in the market for a comprehensive and authoritative guide to the city for visitors or residents. Most of the books on the market are very much black and white archive photo albums or very slim and shallow in content. I wanted this one to be different, hefty enough to provide a good read but beautifully illustrated so it could be bought as a souvenir as well."

The guidebook is 244 pages long, costs £9.99, and describes the main monuments, museums and galleries whilst also giving the lowdown on where to stay, eat, drink, dance, watch sport or shop. The comprehensive food and drink section was produced in association with Manchester Confidential.

There are four walking itineraries around the city and recommendations on days away from Manchester. Biographies of key citizens and episodes in Manchester’s lively history are revealed. The quotes section all about the things people have said about Manchester is hilarious.

Andrew Rosthern writing in the Lancashire & North West Magazine said: ‘A new Manchester guidebook, more loving than any Baedeker, more knowing than any Fodor and loads funnier than any Rough Guide to anywhere.’ Andrew Rosthorn. The Lancashire & North West Magazine, December 2014.

You can order it here. Or buy it from Waterstones, WH Smiths Arndale, Blackwells Oxford Road, The People's History Museum, St Denys Shop and Cornerhouse bookshop.

This is fantastic news, JS writes about Manchester in an comprehensively informed and engaging way like no-one else. Slightly bemused that Gordo rubbished my suggestion here a few months ago that Man Con move into hard-copy publishing! I'll be buying anyway :)

I'll look forward to buying this! Been on a few of Schofield's tours and they're always entertaining and he's probably one of the best writers we have in the city, and certainly the best when it comes to architecture. Hopefully the book will be better subbed than Mancon bwah hah hah

Sounds good JS, although I think including where to stay, eat, drink, dance, watch sport or shop would require updates on a weekly basis or at least a new print per year.

Every year is the idea

Pity. There's plenty of 'where to' suggestions online eg. Mancon that, if you look around are usually up to date. A history/our guide only would have been better. I'd be miffed that aspect of the book would be out of date or be updated a year later.

Perhaps suck it and see as they say. Check out the sample pages here too. The main part of the book is not time sensitive at all.

I bought this excellent book at Blackwells Oxford Road a few weeks ago. It's now my essential guide to this great city, and I'll have it with me every time I go into Manchester. I'm telling all my friends about it now. A real bargain at £9.99.

Jonathan darling, Where are you from? This is just out of curiosity and nothing else.

JonathanMarch 11th 2015.

Irrelevant Paul. But from here is the answer. Why do you ask?

Paul SoanesMarch 12th 2015.

I was born on George Leigh st. I consider myself a true Mancunian and your comments about certain places/buildings/stories really do have the essence of somebody with a passion for Manchester and this is why I ask

It's a good book. So why not, eh? Thank you for your troll-like comments, though. What a wonderful person you are.

There are no excuses for arse-kissing.
