Free garden party

You don't need a garden to hold a garden party – as Manchester Craft and Design Centre will prove this weekend

Free garden party

If the closest thing you've got to a garden is the potted parsley you bought at Morrisons, get yourself to Manchester Craft and Design Centre in the Northern Quarter this Saturday. They're holding a garden party to celebrate the opening of their new exhibition, Yard Birds, which is all about making the most of outdoor space, whether that's a front step, a balcony, a yard, or a window box.

"Bring along a container to recycle as a plant pot. Old sinks, suitcases, chipped mugs and computer hard drive casings can all be used – the quirkier the better."

The team from Hulme Community Garden Centre will be holding hanging basket workshops at 1pm and 3pm (book in advance) where you can make your own basket and purchase the finished item to take home. Or you can bring along a container to recycle as a plant pot. Old sinks, suitcases, chipped mugs and computer hard drive casings can all be used – the quirkier the better.

There will also be a plant and nursery sale, a plant surgery, children's plant pot decorating, face painting, plant swaps, bunting making, smoothie shots, and umbrella makeovers (bring an old brolly and transform it from parapluie to parasol). And of course there's the exhibition itself where you can meet the featured designers and craftspeople. All of this will be accompanied by music from Dr Butler's Hatstand Medicine Band.

Everyone's invited and it's free. If it rains, turn up anyway as it'll be all the same activities but held undercover.

The garden party takes place on Saturday 12 July from 12pm to 4pm.
