Vanessa Lees talks to Best-Groomed Man at the GQ Man of the Year Awards

Published on September 20th 2007.

Fine and dandy

Last month saw every dapper dresser in show business attend the GQ Man of the Year Awards at London’s Royal Opera House.

And quaffing amongst the Saville Row suits and Jimmy Choos was Manchester’s own David Coley. David won a competition run by Lab Series in conjunction with John Lewis and GQ to find the 5 Best-Groomed men from around the UK: the North, the South, the Midlands, London and Scotland.

David, 26 from Bramhall who is an events organiser for exclusive members bar The Circle impressed the judges with his effortlessly stylish look - being overly preened is only fitting for gay men and hairdressers.

After having a Personal Shopping Advisor at John Lewis help him spend £500 on clothes and accessories, David hot footed to London town with a guest. He was treated to a skin consultation using the high-tech skin scanner with Lab Series National Grooming Coach Jay McLaren and received £200 worth of complimentary Lab Series Products. Hair was styled by Francesco Picardi, and the Bobbi Brown make up team prepare David for a GQ Magazine shoot before he posed for the cameras at the GQ Man of the Year Awards.

Over 40 A-List celebrity guests attended this year, including Elton John, Madonna, Jude Law, Naomi Campbell, Helena Christiansen, Elle McPherson, Sophie Dahl, Orlando Bloom, Gordon Ramsey, Jamelia, Kanye West, Lewis Hamilton, Kelly Brook and countless other glitzy names.

We caught up with twinkly-eyed David about being Best-Groomed Man.

Who nominated you?
It was my dad, he went to John Lewis to buy some lab series products and found out about the competition. It was a bit of a shock.

How would you describe your own style?
I don’t have to wear a suit for work, so generally I like to wear jeans, shirt and a cardigan. It’s a tailored but relaxed look

Do you have a skincare routine?
The usual three steps including Lab Series Invigorating Face Scrub Pre-Shave, Daily Moisture Defence lotion containing SPF 15 and Instant Moisture Eye Gel which is really important when you work in the events business because you’re working really long hours.

Is it more acceptable now for blokes to take care of their appearance?
Definitely – not too much though, I doubt the girls would like it if you spent more time in the bathroom then they did. Skincare is much more geared towards men’s grooming now although the whole makeup thing on men is an absolute no no.

What do your friends think of you winning?
I’ve actually kept it relatively low key. I’m hoping to surprise them all when they buy the November issue of GQ.

What was your favourite part of the evening?
Meeting Jude Law. I’ve always been a fan and I thought that if he was going to be there then I’d try to get to speak to him. He was more than happy to have a chat. I was worried that he was going to be a bit of an arse but he was brilliant and he said he liked my suit.

Why do you think you won?
I take care of my appearance but don’t take it to the extreme. Not to sound big headed but the guys at Mankind said I stood out because I mingled and got stuck in. Some of the others during the photo shoot took it a bit too seriously asking for their makeup to be touched up. I just wanted to have fun and get to the after show party.
