Feast! Gorge your senses at Platt Fields

Platt Fields and Manchester International Arts hosts the best free and fun event this weekend

Feast! Gorge your senses at Platt Fields

The people at Manchester International Arts (MIA) must have the best meetings in the world. There must be competitions for who can come up with the most insane, ideas around. Perhaps the best wins a prize, such as a week in Reykjavik dressed as a snow goose.

Friday sees a fiery spectacle with special moments of pyrotechnic wizardry: on Saturday you can watch a luminescent garden appear out of the darkness. On Sunday, a world-music stage will run all afternoon.

MIA, after all, were the fellas who brought us Streets Ahead several years ago. And then repeated the glorious fun of the latter in Liverpool a couple of weeks back.

Now they return to Manchester with one of the best public events of the years. This is Feast!: an extended and very entertaining picnic which runs from Friday 6 June to Sunday 8 June in Platt Fields Park, that splendid green space between Rusholme and Fallowfield off Wilmslow Road.

This event is for everyone - families, groups and friends round the lakeside in Platt Fields. There's outdoor theatre, circus, strolling musicians, magic, puppetry, games and activities, delicious food and good company in a heady mix, spanning two summer evenings and a Sunday afternoon. All you have to do is bring the food, picnic blanket, decorations, candles and so on and MIA will provide the entertainment.

This year there's a larger programme of outdoor theatre, music, dance, circus, strolling musicians, games and activities from the UK and abroad. You can watch and listen, make things, or go boating and canoeing on the lake ... or wait for a musician, poet, storyteller or magician to serenade you at your table.

Each evening will end differently: Friday sees a fiery spectacle with special moments of pyrotechnic wizardry: on Saturday you can watch a luminescent garden appear out of the darkness. On Sunday, a world-music stage will run all afternoon, alongside the rest of the entertainment, courtesy of newly formed Manchester agency Lingua Franca. Catch your chance to dance to famed Congolese star Kanda Bongo Man, amongst others …

And amongst all this, chill out in a games area, weave a chapati picnic tray, create your own banner or make a lantern to add to the brightly coloured ones dancing on the water. Design your own pavement art, create a giant mandala-shaped rangoli in sand, make your own pizza, throw your wish into the Chinese wishing tree or try out that amazing French skill of free-running (with French instructors)

Feast! Is at Platt Fields Park by the Lake from this Friday. Fri 7.30pm- 11pm, Sat 5pm-11pm, Sun 1pm-6pm
