If you’ve always fancied yourself as a cosmic girl but fearful of looking like Star Wars C3PO, then Kathryn Whittaker helps you in the metallic department

So, we have seen the catwalks of London Fashion week and gossiped over the size zero debate, but how does what we have seen sashayed up the runways actually translate to a rainy day in Manchester?

Well ladies, you can indeed get this season’s hottest looks without a) spending a fortune and b) looking like a right numpty. So sit back, relax and let’s take it one step at a time. This week it’s metallics or ‘futuristic’ as the fashion trends brand it - don’t worry, there isn’t a bacofoil catsuit in sight.

Now then, quick rule for you…shiny fabrics advance towards the eye and therefore make things look bigger. This can be a great thing for maximising body areas but not so great for disguising, so use it carefully! If you are less blessed in the chest as it were metallics are a great look. Try this very cute Puff Sleeve Top from Limited Collection at M&S for just £35. The ruching at the top and longer sleeves make it a great choice for maximising a smaller bust. Avoid if you are blessed with the boobies!

Metallics detailing is the way forward for a futuristic look this spring so think sequins and you cant go far wrong, unless of course you go all Elton John with them. No, instead use them in pattern and with taste please! This gorgeous silver sequinned number is from French Connection and would look great over jeans, linens or even just as a dress should you be so daring?! Now the one thing about detailing is that you will pay for it so this one will set you back £110, however, a quick rummage in Primark should conjure up some tasty little numbers.

If all over shine ain’t your cup of tea then go glam in the shoe department. Metallic footwear, contrary to popular belief is an excellent neutral option and will pretty much go with anything you throw with it. There are plenty of shimmery ballet pumps, wedges and heels about to satisfy all budgets so experiment with it. A fave of mine at the moment is this gold peep toe offering from Dorothy Perkins £25. With it’s platform sole and stacked heel it makes for a very ‘on trend’ choice so pop them on with a sassy a-line skirt or culottes for a fresh spring look.

For fabulous neutral accessories that will mix and match with your existing wardrobe, sliver and gold are definitely top of the list. They can glam up any plain t-shirt and give a sexy twist to a formal look. This fun, oversized bowling bag from Monsoon £25 ticks all the boxes. The star detail on the front pocket and shinetastic shimmer give it tonnes of personality and it is guaranteed to turn even the dullest of girlies into a metallic madame. Chuck it with wide leg grey trousers and a tailored shirt for maximum impact, add a high silver choker and you are ready to roll.

Well, that’s it for me, off to dust off my super stretch gold all in one - I knew it would come in handy one of these days……

See you soon
