Cornerhouse Dishes the Dirt on the Corpse Bride

Published on October 12th 2005.

Halloween is nearly upon us, and a ghoulish new exhibition is set to open at the Cornerhouse this month in anticipation of Tim Burton’s latest macabre offering, Corpse Bride.

In the film, dark and romantic in true Tim Burton style, a young man, Victor (Johnny Depp) stops on his way to his wedding to practice his vows and jokingly places the ring on a stick in the ground. Unfortunately for Victor however, the stick turns out to be the skeletal finger of a murdered young woman (Helena Bonham Carter), whose grisly, yet strangely beautiful corpse then comes after him in a deranged stalker stylee, claiming to be his rightful bride.

The exhibition, Bare Bones, will run from Thursday 13th October to Sunday 6th November at the Cornerhouse, and will feature the actual puppets used in the film as well as reproductions of Tim Burton’s early conceptual sketches for the characters and detailed character development drawings.

The puppets, created by Tim Burton and Carlos Grangel, were constructed by Altrincham-based puppet makers Mackinnon & Saunders, the leading stop-motion animation studio that previously worked with Tim Burton on Mars Attack!

The intricate process of making the characters of Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride will be discussed when Carlos Grangel, Peter Saunders and Ian Mackinnon come to Cornerhouse on Thu 13 October to officially open the exhibition.

This will be followed by a special preview screening of the film and a question-and-answer session with the artists. Peter Saunders and Ian MacKinnon will also be holding an animation masterclass on Wednesdey, 26th October at the Cornerhouse.

Don’t miss out on this rare opportunity to see the erm, actors of a film that looks set to delight necrophiliacs everywhere and become one of this year’s cinematic success stories.
