Chorlton Arts Festival is 10

Look out for lantern leaflets at this interactive multi-arts event

Chorlton Arts Festival is 10

Chorlton Arts Festival is one of the largest multi-arts events in the north of England and this year it's celebrating its tenth birthday.

Opening Chorlton Arts Festival with a bang on Thursday 20 May are jazz singer Claire Martin and legendary composer Sir Richard Rodney Bennett. Then bookending the other end of the event is a fabulous Street Feast on Sunday 30 May. In between, there’s a huge range of performances, readings and installations from artists as diverse as Elbow favourite The Acorn, celeb-fronted Adrian Edmondson & the Bad Shepherds, local novelist Elizabeth Baines and comedy from Edinburgh Festival listing Ivan Brackenbury’s Radio Show.

One of the many art projects taking place is Flashlight, which culminates in a flashmob-style event on Saturday 22 May at 9pm. The Bread art collective is distributing 10,000 flyers throughout Chorlton explaining how to turn them into lanterns for the big finale. Instructions will remain top secret until the event but an example might be 'Place your lanterns in a line through the park at 9pm. Space the lanterns one metre apart.'

Locations will include alleyways and hidden spaces and it's hoped that residents and passers-by who stumble across the work will take away a new perspective or experience of the place in which they live.

This year's festival will also feature a mini film festival and its very own radio station. More details of the radio station can be found at www.chorltonartsradio.com

The Festival Hub has already launched in Chorlton precinct and is open until Saturday 22 May, 10am-4pm, for picking up info and tickets. (While 75 per cent of the events are free, some still require advance tickets). There's also a ticket hotline on 07794 860305 or via tickets@chorltonartsfestival.com.
