Rio-style revelry hits Liverpool with the UK's biggest Brazilian parade

Brazilica Samba Festival

LATIN-STYLE partying hits Liverpool this July with a new three-day Brazilian festival on 15-17 July.

Brazilica is an expansion of the annual Liverpool Carnival parade which attracted over 30,000 spectators last summer. This year the family-friendly celebrations will last all weekend with a fiesta full of Brazilian-inspired activities and workshops – plus the spectacular sparkle-fest that is the Samba parade.

The festivities start on Friday 15 July as the city centre's shops and bars host the ‘Samba in the City’ event, a colourful taster of the carnival to get people in the party mood.

On Saturday 16 July, carnival activities will take place around Liverpool throughout the day including a free all-day South American street party at Williamson Square. Here you'll find open dance classes, music sessions, street football demonstrations and workshops, plus Brazilian food, drink and fun for all ages.

The carnival steps up a gear in the evening as over 1,000 revellers join the procession to the festival site. Expect Brazilian bands and DJs, extravagant costumes, sparkling dancers and colossal floats. The organisers are promising an exotic, vibrant spectacle with festivities continuing well into the evening, and finishing with an after-party event at a city centre club.

Then wind down the weekend with Samba Sunday on 17 July as the carnival gets cultural with sports, film and artistic events taking place across the city.

Or if you're still swept up in fiesta fever, head to Chavasse Park where there'll be a huge Zumbathon event – one of the biggest in the country, apparently. It'll be raising money for the Brazilica charity and is a great way to blow the cobwebs away after the partying on Saturday.

Organisers have confirmed that Brazilian Samba group Nene de Vila Matilde will be flying in from Sao Paulo especially for the festival. They’ll be performing alongside acclaimed UK Samba group Paraiso School of Samba and local groups including Liverpool Samba School and Batala Liverpool.
