Brassed off

Manchester will be alive with the sound of music this weekend as the city plays host to one of the biggest brass band festivals in the world.

The new season at the Bridgewater Hall will get off to a crashing start with the Great Northern Brass Arts Festival 2006, on Saturday 2nd September.

The festival will showcase the finest brass bands, ensembles and soloists in the world, including The Black Dyke Band (seriously, that’s their name), Fodens Band and Jens Lindemann, one of the world’s most popular trumpet players.

The festival commences at 10am with the brass bands marching from the Bridgewater Hall around the streets of Manchester, so if you’re a city centre resident with a hangover invest in some earplugs. Non hungover people – make sure that you get down there to support the festival.

Following the parade there will be a series of concerts at the Bridgewater Hall, going right into the evening.

Festival Director Philip Biggs said: "It is tremendous that all the featured bands and soloists are able to perform in this major festival of brass band music." Philip went on to say: "Manchester is seen as the world centre of brass bands by so many people and I am delighted that this festival is taking place in The Bridgewater Hall."
